Many people have been proposing new projects in light of the trade and economic conflict with the United States. The civil society groups emphasize that a socio-ecological transition is needed to ensure Quebec\u2019s economic prosperity and combat climate change.<\/p>\n<p>At a news conference, they described as \u201cmirages\u201d and a \u201cpolitical and media bubble\u201d recent discussion proposing to relaunch fossil fuel transportation projects on Quebec territory.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese types of projects, whether GNL Qu\u00e9bec or \u00c9nergie Est, were already outdated when they were rejected in 2015 and 2021. Imagine now! Demand for fossil gas in Europe is falling, and investors are not there. Even if these projects were to get off the ground in several years, the energy transition would have continued and we would end up with superfluous and costly infrastructure,\u201d\u00a0<strong>the signatories said<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cQuebec does not have to compromise the integrity of its territory or the health of its environment and its inhabitants to allow the oil and gas industry to sell its hydrocarbons in an attempt to respond to a temporary economic issue. Here in Quebec, we have proudly embraced the ecological transition, clean energy production and the economy of tomorrow. We will not go back,\u201d\u00a0<strong>they added<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>No social acceptability<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>In terms of social acceptability, the groups also recalled the long history of victories of the Quebec population against the fossil fuel industry over the past 15 years, battles that resulted in adoption of a law against the exploitation and exploration of these resources in 2022.<\/p>\n<p>In the wake of these citizen victories, the argument surrounding Quebec\u2019s energy security has always been used to try to sell unacceptable projects to the population.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople are scared about energy security, but the reality is that most of the oil that Quebec consumes comes from Western Canada and the demand for natural gas is declining in Europe, particularly in Germany. Not only do these fossil infrastructure projects not correspond to our environmental objectives, but potential customers are not and will not be there,\u201d\u00a0<strong>the signatory organizations and experts said<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Crises don\u2019t take a break<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Finally, the groups would like to emphasize that the current crisis with the United States is major and that it rightly causes anxiety and fear among Quebec families. It must be addressed. However, this crisis must not make us forget the even more fundamental ones that are already affecting us in terms of society, climate and biodiversity.<\/p>\n<p>The risks associated with the projects potentially making a comeback are the same as when they were rejected: dangers of accidents and spills, threats to beluga whale populations, risks to the fauna and flora of the St. Lawrence River and serious issues related to human health.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEnvironmental crises will not take a break because U.S. President Donald Trump has mood swings. We cannot face one crisis by ignoring another. The best way to face them all is to embrace the ecological and social transition,\u201d\u00a0<strong>the signatories concluded<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align:
