{"id":17089,"date":"2022-09-27T16:38:45","date_gmt":"2022-09-27T21:38:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/cqde.org\/news\/press-release-climate-washing-the-cqde-calls-for-tighter-legal-and-regulatory-supervision\/"},"modified":"2025-04-16T14:36:04","modified_gmt":"2025-04-16T19:36:04","slug":"press-release-climate-washing-the-cqde-calls-for-tighter-legal-and-regulatory-supervision","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cqde.org\/en\/news\/press-release-climate-washing-the-cqde-calls-for-tighter-legal-and-regulatory-supervision\/","title":{"rendered":"Climate-washing: the CQDE calls for tighter legal and regulatory supervision"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><b>Montreal, September 27, 2022 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8211; The Centre qu\u00e9b\u00e9cois du droit de l\u2019environnement (CQDE) today released an important report entitled &#8220;Climate-washing: How to Turn the Tide&#8221;, which examines the regulatory landscape in Quebec and Canada and, drawing on best practices from around the world, makes a series of recommendations for policy makers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As claims of carbon neutrality and net zero greenhouse gas emissions proliferate, there is also a significant increase in controversies related to climate-washing in the private sector.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;More and more companies are making climate commitments and offering so-called carbon neutral products to meet consumer and investor demands. Unfortunately, some of these claims are not based on real GHG emission reductions. We are therefore advocating for a better framework for corporate climate claims, both at the federal and provincial levels,&#8221; explains Mtre Julien O. Beaulieu, lead author of the report.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;The problem is that when false or misleading, these statements are likely to distort important decisions of various stakeholders in the context of a climate emergency,&#8221; points out Mtre Marc Bishai, a lawyer at CQDE who contributed to the report.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;The objective of this report is to take stock of the ways in which the legal and regulatory framework can be improved, adapted, and strengthened to better respond to reality.
