Montreal, October 22, 2021 \u2013 Today, the Centre qu\u00e9b\u00e9cois du droit de l\u2019environnement (CQDE) and the Soci\u00e9t\u00e9 pour la nature et les parcs (SNAP Qu\u00e9bec) <\/span>filed a lawsuit in federal court <\/span>against Canada\u2019s Minister\u00a0of\u00a0Environment and Climate Change<\/span>, seeking to compel the minister to recommend<\/span> the <\/span>issuance of <\/span>an <\/span>order targeting the section of the critical habitat of chorus frogs<\/span> located in Longueuil. At\u00a0the same time, <\/span>the organizations also<\/span> initiated\u00a0proceedings before the Superior Court of\u00a0Quebec <\/span>with the main objective of obtaining suspension of work and activities that may alter the critical habitat of <\/span>chorus frogs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201c<\/span>The <\/span>Species at\u00a0Risk Act <\/span><\/i>is clear<\/span> and <\/span>requires the Minister to recommend<\/span> protection of the <\/span>critical habitat<\/span> when a province does not adequately do so<\/span>. <\/span>By seeking redress, we\u2019re giving notice \u2013 ringing the recess bell as it were\u2013 <\/span>that <\/span>there will be no more delays in the protection of species at risk in Quebec,<\/span>\u201d indicates Alain Branchaud, <\/span>executive director of<\/span> SNAP Qu\u00e9bec.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt is frankly regrettable to have to, once again, turn to the courts to protect this threatened species<\/span>. <\/span>The Quebec government has abdicated its responsibilities, the threat is clear, and the federal minister’s obligations are just as obvious,<\/span>\u201d <\/span>asserts Genevi\u00e8ve Paul, executive director of the CQDE<\/span>. <\/span>\u201cWe hope that our legal actions will finally lead to suspension of the work before it\u2019s too late<\/span>,\u201d she adds.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is worth remembering that after a number of weeks of calling for federal government action, and given provincial government inertia and the urgency to counteract the destruction of the chorus frog habitats <\/span>in Longueuil, <\/span>both organizations<\/span> issued <\/span>an <\/span>ultimatum<\/span><\/a> to the <\/span>federal government last week<\/span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

While governments are obviously stalling for time<\/span>, <\/span>the work on the extension of Boulevard B\u00e9liveau in Longueuil continues at a frantic pace<\/span>. <\/span>As evidenced in photos taken<\/span> this week by the newspapers Le Devoir and La Presse, <\/span>destruction of the area designated as the essential habitat<\/span> of <\/span>chorus frogs<\/span> is already well underway<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The two organizations do not exclude <\/span>other legal re<\/span>course in the days ahead to move forward on this issue<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n
