This report demonstrates that, despite the proliferation of environmental claims regarding consumer products, consumers still do not have access to reliable and comprehensive information to inform their choices towards greater eco-responsibility.<\/span><\/p><h4><b>A lack of information that undermines \u201cgreen\u201d choices<br><\/b><\/h4><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whether buying a car, food, or electronics, consumer decisions have significant environmental impacts. Yet the vast majority of advertisements, packaging, and marketing communications provide no information on products\u2019 actual environmental footprint. <\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When information is provided by companies, it is often incomplete, difficult to understand, verify, or compare, leading to confusion rather than informed choices.  <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.deloitte.com\/ca\/fr\/qui-nous-sommes\/press-room\/while-brands-think-they-have-consumer-trust-most-canadians-are-skeptical-about-sustainability-claims.html\">According to a Deloitte survey<\/a><\/span><\/span> from 2023 : <\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">23% of Canadian consumers said they were frustrated by the difficulty of distinguishing true environmental claims from false ones.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">49% of Canadian consumers refuse to pay a higher price for \u201csustainable\u201d products because they find it difficult to understand certain claims and 46% doubt the veracity of companies\u2019 environmental claims.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCitizens want to make choices consistent with their environmental values. But the information made available to them must be clear and reliable. Currently, the burden too often falls on the shoulders of the public,\u201d emphasizes Genevi\u00e8ve Paul, Executive Director of the CQDE.<\/span><\/p><h4><b>Five recommendations to restore transparency<\/b><\/h4><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To address the identified gaps, the CQDE has formulated five key recommendations:<br><\/span><\/p><ol><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Establish an environmental labeling system.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strengthen the regulatory framework for environmental certifications.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make the disclosure of evidence supporting environmental claims mandatory.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strengthen enforcement of legislation that regulates misleading advertising.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Prohibit certain advertising representations that are inherently misleading.<\/span><\/li><\/ol><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to the CQDE, these measures are essential to protect the public, ensure fair competition, and support a genuine ecological transition.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe green transition cannot be based on vague or misleading marketing promises. It requires a robust legal framework capable of ensuring real transparency and preventing greenwashing from undermining public trust,\u201d adds Genevi\u00e8ve Paul.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The CQDE notes that these measures alone will not be sufficient to ensure the ecological transition.
